VAWZ has kicked off the welfare work with routine visits to abattoirs to inspect slaughtering facilities and the modes of transportation being used to get livestock to places of slaugter. Meryl Harrison has been accompanied by Dr. Anthony Donohoe on these visits and some of the methods of transportation and slaughtering have been found to be less than desirable.
Warnings and suggestions for improvements have been issued and this far those involved have been co-operative and undertsanding. Routine visits to abattoirs will be carried out on a regular basis and facilities will be monitored closely to ensure the humane destruction of animals at slaughter.
